Ask this question to any executive, “What is professionalism?

The answers will vary, but you will notice that there is a general lack of succinct understanding of the concept.

One thing is clear: Just because one is a professional by qualifications, sits in a modern office, uses modern communication channels, he or she automatically does not exhibit professionalism.

To lead the employees of the present generation, and to motivate them to own up your organizations’ strategic objectives, and work on the action plans, it is imperative to develop a connection and earn their respect.

Your professionalism helps you build and maintain that connection.

Professionalism is a blend of the following concepts: a systematic approach, focus and pride in what one is doing, confident, competent, motivation towards a particular goal, accountability, respect for people irrespective of rank, status or gender, responsibility while on the path to a particular goal, commitment to word and deed, control of emotions etc. etc.

Basically it all boils down to where you leave out emotional upheavals and stay focused on the issue no matter what the issue is or how stressful and trying a situation turns out to be.

You are observed by everybody. You are expected to remain cool as a cucumber, grace under pressure, while keeping the total focus on what one is supposed to be doing and accomplishing. You can’t act these traits, you will be caught. You must make them part of your reflex.

Why Should You Internalise Professional Excellence & Make it Part of Your Reflex?

You set directions, clear and visible organizational values, and high expectations for the workforce.

You ensure the creation of strategies, systems, and methods for achieving performance excellence, stimulating innovation, building knowledge and capabilities, and ensuring organizational sustainability.

You serve as a role model through your ethical behavior and your personal involvement in planning, communicating, coaching the workforce, developing future leaders, reviewing organizational performance, and recognizing members of your workforce.

You create customer-focus: Your thinking and actions are based on customers' requirements.

You take into account all product features and characteristics and all modes of customer access and support that contribute value to your customers. You understand today’s customer desires and anticipate future customer desires and marketplace potential.

You focus on organizational and personal learning: You have a well-executed approach that includes sharing knowledge via systematic processes.Your appraoch includes both continuous improvement of existing approaches and significant change or innovation, leading to new goals and approaches. You embedd learning needs in the way your organization operates.

You value your employees, suppliers and partners: You ensure success by creating an engaged workforce that benefits from meaningful work, clear organizational direction, and performance accountability and that has a safe, trusting, and cooperative environment.

Successful internal and external partnerships develop longer-term objectives, thereby creating a basis for mutual investments and respect.

You are agile: You demonstrate a capacity for rapid change and flexibility so that you prepare everyone to respond rapidly to new or emerging business issues. You insist on major improvements in response times through new work systems, simplification of work units and processes, or the ability for rapid changeover from one process to another. You create a cross-trained and empowered workforce to meet such demanding environments.

You have a strong future orientation and a willingness to make long-term commitments to key stakeholders—your customers, workforce, suppliers, partners, and stockholders; the public; and your community.

You understand the short- and longer-term factors that affect your organization and marketplace.

You ensure that your organization’s planning should anticipate many factors, such as customers’ expectations, new business and partnering opportunities, changing economic conditions, workforce development and hiring needs, etc.

You focus on innovation. You focus on making meaningful changes to improve your products, services, programs, processes, operations, and business model to create new value for your stakeholders.

You ensure that innovation leads your organization to new dimensions of performance. You encourage taking intelligent risks. You lead and manage the team so that innovation becomes part of the learning culture. You integrate innovation into daily work.

You practice the concept of Management by Fact: You are not emotional - your actions are not based on feeling. You depend on the measurement and analysis of performance. You ensure that such measurements derive from business needs and strategy, and they provide critical data and information about key processes, outputs, and results.

You demonstrate Societal Responsibility: You always stress responsibilities to the public, ethical behaviour, and the need to consider societal well-being and benefit. You are a role models for your organization in focusing on ethics and the protection of public health, safety, and the environment. You also emphasize resource conservation and waste reduction at the source. Planning should anticipate adverse impacts from production, distribution, transportation, use, and disposal of your products. You ensure that effective planning prevent problems, provide for a forthright response if problems occur, and make available the information and support needed to maintain public awareness, safety, and confidence.

You focus on Results and Creating Value: You ensure that your organization's performance measurements focuses on key results. You use results to create and balance value for your key stakeholders—your customers, workforce, stockholders, suppliers, and partners; the public; and the community. By creating value for your key stakeholders, you build loyalty, contribute to growing the economy, and contribute to society. To meet the sometimes conflicting and changing aims that balancing value implies, you ensure that your organizational strategy explicitly include key stakeholder requirements. This will help ensure that plans and actions meet differing stakeholder needs and avoid adverse impacts on any stakeholders.
